An all-black outfit can ooze a level of sophistication that is edgy and chic. If you are following me on Instagram, you should be aware of my adoration for black clothing.
You can see a similar all black look of mine on quantity over quality fashion post.
As Coco Chanel once said:
“When I find a colour darker than black, I’ll wear it. But until then, I’m wearing black”.
There are a couple of style rules that I try to adhere to, when creating this type of outfit.
1. Mix-and-match texture
One of my worst mistakes was selecting a black dress and cardigan of the same material. Whilst it was not ‘horrific’, it certainly did not create the effect that I was after. In fact it might have been difficult to decipher whether or not my jacket was actually attached to the dress.
I like the idea of wearing something light like silk and then choosing a chunky knit or jacket to coincide. This really adds definition to your look and makes the various black pieces all individually stand-out.
2. Choose where to go figure-hugging and where to go loose
In other words, if you are wearing a huge, thick jumper, it would go well with a more structured or tight trouser (skirt etc). I’m obsessed with thigh-high boots being matched to loose-fitting dresses.
Tights are a perfect way to balance out an all-black outfit. I have many pairs because I wear them rather routinely.
3.Highlight a body part
I cinched in my waist with a belt, otherwise the outfit would have been wearing me as opposed to vice-versa. You do not have to freeze your legs in the cold or have frozen arms to highlight a part of your body. As point 2 suggests, whatever you want to flaunt, select a piece of clothing for that area which is form-fitting.
What is your favourite way to style an all-black outfit and how often do you wear them?
